Jennifer, a longstanding member, recently opened up to us and shared a deeply emotional and heartfelt story.
“South Manchester Credit Union are the reason our family dog is alive. I say family dog because she is a member of the family and has been since she was 6 months old.
We are her second home as her family had to move to a home with no pets. when my now teenagers, who were toddlers at the time, took her in. She was immediately at home and has been ever since. She’s loving and loyal, and I can go on forever about all her amazing traits, but coming to the point…
Not that long ago, I contacted South Manchester Credit Union because one day, our Bella was showing signs of sickness, and within 3 days, she had severe weight loss. Within that short time, she had gone from a round, healthy doggy to a dog looking like she was on her deathbed.
I needed help for Bella immediately, and I took her to our local vet. I paid for a visit, and they advised me she had pyometra, an infection in the womb.
Surgery, and all that went with it, would have cost me thousands with our local vet, and as a single parent, I cannot afford that.
The vet advised me to put her down and the price that would cost…
I broke down in tears, holding my dog, who could barely hold her head up at this point. This was in the parking lot with everyone watching, as this was during COVID. I said I couldn’t do that because I couldn’t afford it.
The vet advised me to contact PDSA. which meant many calls back and forth by me to the vet and PDSA. They needed documents to confirm loss of life if no surgery. All whilst my Bella was getting weaker every moment, and I was getting more emotionally distraught.
I finally got the go-ahead for treatment from the PDSA, but the cost would be £400, and I also needed money for taxis there and back, medications and even a donation at the end.
I had no one to turn to for this amount of money without it costing me a lot afterwards, and, of course, I thought of South Manchester Credit Union. I felt broken when I contacted them after all that had happened before and with the thought of losing our girl if I couldn’t get the money.
And as usual, as broken and emotional as I was, you were friendly, empathic and helpful. You helped me save a family member who is now a happy and healthy girl once more. I think it should be known that I had nowhere else to turn to. It was an illness that came out of nowhere and took her down quickly.
If you ever do quotes of stories or how South Manchester Credit Union changed a life, that’s it for us.
Loans for Christmas and savings are great but saving Bella’s life meant everything to us.”
