Jackey is a member of our community who works for a local housing trust, Southway Housing. She is a devoted mum of three who has saved with us here at the credit union for years now. Because of Balance, our workplace savings scheme, Jackey can sit back and relax while her savings grow securely here.
How Jackey found us
Before Jackey became a member, she was facing financial hurdles; she had been diagnosed with ADHD and struggled with impulsive spending. When her dad faced illness, Jackey stepped in to become his full-time carer – this took a toll on her finances and left her unable to pay her bills.
On her journey to get back on track financially, she was recommended through her work to check us out – thank you, Elaine! Jackey wanted to join us to start a savings pot, and Balance made kickstarting a savings habit convenient and accessible. Jackey told us that “it was a really good way to save, having money taken out your wages” “It’s good for someone like me, I can’t impulsively spend it”. She also enjoys how it’s an “automatic way of money going into your savings”.
How Jackey felt supported
Before she joined, Jackey had been unsure if a community credit union would help support her but now, she realised that “credit unions are a saving method for everybody, and they help to support the local community through loaning back”. She would recommend the workplace savings scheme to others – “Even if it’s only £25 a month, you don’t notice the money going out and going into your savings. It is flexible, as your circumstances change you can put it up or down, it’s simple”
Jackey is invested in her community and wants to see everyone thrive, she values that South Manchester Credit Union is a community-led cooperative. That is why she chooses to save here instead of elsewhere.
Jackeys advice to other savers
We had to know her advice for someone at the start of their savings journey and she told us
“If saving is new to you, start small and then build it up as you can, because a lot of people don’t have confidence in their own money, and it is difficult in these hard times as well. So even if you can only put away £2.50 a week, you’ve got that money there”
We think her advice is brilliant, as we know here to kickstart a positive savings habit it does not require you to save lots just to save regularly. If you are like Jackey and know that Balance will help you grow a good savings pot then you can find out more here.
